KING'S WOMEN'S BASKETBALL FALLS AT GWYNEDD-MERCY, 74-68
GWYNEDD VALLEY -- Host Gwynedd-Mercy College used a late 9-1 run as the host Griffins held on to defeat an injury depleted King's College women's basketball team 74-68 Wednesday in Gwynedd Valley.
With the win Gwynedd-Mercy, a 2007 NCAA Division III national tournament qualifier, improved to 5-2 while King's slipped to 5-3.
King's played the game without pre-season all-American center
Andrea Hochstuhl and power forwards
Krystina Durako and
Sarah O'Doherty, who were all injured, leaving the Lady Monarchs with just one healthy post player on its its roster.
The Lady Monarchs put forth an admirable effort and entered halftime tied with Gwynedd-Mercy at 35-35. With the teams trading leads through much of the second half, the turning point came with 5:47 left in the contest and the Griffins holding a slim 59-57 lead. Erica Fulforth would ignite Gwynedd with a three-pointer that would spark a 9-1 Griffin run over the next 3:13 of the game as the home squad built a8-58 advantage with 2:34 remaining.
King's would cut the lead to 72-65 on a three-pointer by
Kaitlyn Fiorino with 0:13 left but were forced to foul and Kathy Tierney netted both charity tosses with 0:09 left to seal the victory.
Jenna Palumbo added a three-pointer with 0:05 on the clock to bring the score to its final margin.
The Lady Monarchs, who were out-rebounded 46-35, were paced by Palumbo and
Jessica Paettie with 17 points each. Fiorino netted 12 points with seven rebounds while
Lauren Kendra added four points, 10 rebounds, and seven assists.
Kaitlyn Malshefski, King's lone healthy post player, contributed with eight points and three rebounds while
Kristen Baumes chipped in with six points.
Gwynedd-Mercy was led by Kate Wisniewski and Kristy Cramp with 16 points each while Tierney and Beckie Strokecker added 14 and 13 points respectively.
King's returns to action Saturday when the Lady Monarchs host Widener University at 1:00 p.m. in Scandlon Gymnasium.
