NEUMANN TOPS KING'S IN LADY MONARCH CLASSIC OPENER
WILKES-BARRE -- Brittany Whetts scored a game high 16 points and pulled down 13 rebounds to lead Neumann College to a 64-56 victory over host King's College in the second game of the Lady Monarch Classic Friday night.
With the win, Neumann improves to 5-5 on the year and advances to play Salisbury University Saturday afternoon in the championship game. With the loss, King's falls to 5-7 overall and will play Norwich University in the consolation game.
King's jumped out early after a layup by
Sarah O'Doherty gave the Lady Monarchs a 16-7 lead with 10:06 remaining in the first half. Whetts would answer for Neumann with four points at the charity stripe along with a layup to give Neumann a 30-29 lead at the half.
Cold shooting from the floor would trouble King's as the Lady Monarchs only shot 21.9 (7-32) percent from the floor in the second half. Neumann began to pull away late in the second half and would extend their lead to 60-54 after a three-pointer from Dominique Thompson.
Both teams struggled from behind the arc as King's shot 10.0 (2-20) percent from three-point range, while Neumann shot 16.7 (2-12) from three-point range. Neumann held a big advantage at the free throw line converting on 22 of 32 attempts, while King's only managed 12 of 16 from the charity stripe.
King's was led by
Kaitlyn Fiorino with 12 points and six rebounds.
Jenna Palumbo followed with 10 points and three rebounds.
Andrea Hochstuhl added eight points and a team high nine rebounds, seeing her first action since an injury sidelined her on November 25.
Joining Whetts in double figures for Neumann was Caitlin Agnew with 12 points and four rebounds. Ashley Pearsall and Dominique Thompson each contributed nine points.
