KING'S WOMEN FALL AT HOME TO LYCOMING, 57-54
WILKES-BARRE – The King's College women's basketball team was unable to overcome a dismal shooting performance in the first half and saw its second-half rally fall just short as the Lady Monarchs dropped a 57-54 victory to visiting Lycoming College Saturday in Scandlon Gymnasium.
With the loss, King's slipped to 2-5 on the year while Lycoming improved to 6-1. The victory also ended Lycoming's 13-game losing streak to the Lady Monarchs.
Lycoming opened up the game with a 16-3 lead with 8:02 left in the first half as the Lady Monarchs made just one field goal over the first 12:29 of the contest. King's finally showed some offensive life when Kaitlyn Malshefski hit a three-pointer and Kaitlyn Fiorino and Paige Carlin scored to cut the lead to 16-10 with 6:13 remaining in the half. The Warriors pushed the lead back to 10 at 21-11 with 2:20 left following a three-pointer by Allison Mock.
The Lady Monarchs used a 7-3 spurt to bring the halftime score to 24-18 following a bucket inside by Brittany Muscatell with 0:10 remaining. King's shoot just 17.2 (5-29) percent from the field in the first half and were also 7-of-12 from the foul line.
In the second half King's fell behind 26-18 when Rebecca Leid scored the first bucket of the final stanza for the Warriors. The Lady Monarchs chipped away with a 9-3 run and cut the lead to 30-27 on a bucket down low from Julianna Lynott. Lycoming responded with a 9-2 spurt and took a 39-29 lead on a three-pointer from Allison Engler with 11:11 remaining.
But King's would again counter with a 8-2 surge to cut the lead to 41-37 after a traditional three-point play by Carlin with 9:06 left. After Lycoming took a 47-39 lead with 7:02 on the clock, King's battled back to tie the score at 52-52 with 2:26 left following a layup by Carlin, two foul shots from Kristen Baumes, and a pair of foul shots by Fiorino.
The tie was short-lived, however, as Mock drilled a wide-open three-pointer just 0:13 later following a King's defensive lapse. Fiorino then made one-of-two foul shots to cut the lead to 55-53 with 1:43 on the clock. After a Lycoming miss, Carlin was fouled driving to the basket and made one-of-two charity tosses to cut the lead to 55-54 with 1:05 left. After another Warrior miss, King's missed out on an opportunity to take the lead with a costly turnover. Lycoming took advantage when Kaitlyn Ober scored inside with 0:06.
After a King's time-out, the Lady Monarchs need a three-pointer to send the game to overtime but King's was unable to get off a shot as Lycoming held on for the victory.
Carlin led King's with a career-high 20 points on 5-of-10 shooting and 10-of-13 foul shots while adding seven rebounds. Fiorino added 13 points and 10 rebounds as the only other Lady Monarch to reach double figures in scoring. Lynott contributed with four points and eight rebounds.
Mock paced Lycoming with 16 points, including four three-pointers while Ober netted 10 points with seven boards..
King's, which held a 44-38 rebounding advantage, also went 23-of-31 from the foul line while Lycoming was 11-of-16 from the charity stripe. King's shot 34.6 (9-26) in the second half to finish the game with a 25.5 (14-55) shooting percentage.
The Lady Monarchs return to action Monday at 6:00 p.m. when King's hosts a men's and women's doubleheader against Alvernia College.
