King's Women Fall to Wilkes in Double-Overtime, 65-61

KING'S WOMEN FALL TO WILKES IN DOUBLE-OVERTIME, 65-61 
 
WILKES-BARRE –  The host Wilkes University women's basketball team rallied to tie the score late in both regulation and the first overtime, then outscored King's College 6-1 in the second overtime period as the Lady Colonels snapped a 23-game losing streak to the Lady Monarchs 65-61 Thursday in the Marts Center.

With the loss, King's slipped to 7-12 overall and 5-5 in Freedom Conference play. Wilkes, meanwhile, improved to 10-8 and 5-5 in league games.

King's trailed 26-23 at the half but used 13 points over the first 9:52 of the second half to give the Lady Monarchs a 44-37 lead with 10:08 to play. King's would maintain its lead at 50-43 when Fiorino hit on a three-pointer with 2:37 left in regulation. But Wilkes rallied with a 7-0 run and tied the score at 50-50 on an Alison Horn three-pointer with 0:54 to play.

King's Brittany Muscatell made two foul shots with 0:35 left to push the score to 52-50, but Samantha Gosse knotted the score at 0:26 with a lay-up to send the game into overtime.

The Lady Monarchs opened with a 7-2 run to take a 59-54 lead after a Fiorino lay-up with 1:44 left. But Wilkes used a three-pointer from Brittany Ely at 1:23, then pushed the game to a second overtime when Sam Lynam converted an off-balanced lay-up with 0:07 to play.

In the second extra session, Simcox made one-of-two foul shots to give Wilkes a 60-59 lead, but Muscatell converted two charity tosses to give King's a 61-60 lead with 1:39 left. Wilkes closed out the game by scoring the final five points on a basket by Simcox, one-of-two foul shots from Ely, and two more Simcox free throws with 0:34 to play to seal the outcome.

The Wilkes victory was the first for the Lady Colonels in nearly 11 years, dating back 11 seasons to a 63-57 triumph over King's on February 11, 1997.

King's was led by Fironi with 26 points, including six three-pointers. Muscatell added 10 points an six rebounds but no other King's player scored more than five points. Julianna Lynott posted a team-high 10 rebounds.

Wilkes was paced by Simcox with 28 points and nine rebounds. Ely added 11 points while Gosse snared 12 rebounds.

King's will be idle until Wednesday when the Lady Monarchs host Misericordia at 6:00 p.m. in Scandlon Gym.
