KING'S WOMNEN'S BASKETBALL DROPS 76-50 VERDICT TO GWYNEDD-MERCY
WILKES-BARRE – The King's College women's basketball team produced its lowest one-half scoring total of the season in the first half and would never recover as the Lady Monarchs dropped a 76-50 verdict to visiting Gwynedd-Mercy College in a non-conference matchup Thursday in Scandlon Gymnasium.
With the loss, King's fell to 4-8 on the year while Gwynedd-Mercy improved to 8-3.
After scoring the first basket of the game 0:32 into the contest, the Lady Monarchs were unable to mount any offense. The Griffins, who also struggled offensively early on, would score 11 of the next 13 points to take a 11-4 lead with 11:32 left in the first half. After a pair of foul shots by King's Paige Carlin cut the lead to 11-6 at the 9:28 mark, Gwynedd-Mercy scored five straight points to push the lead to 16-6 with 7:37 on the clock. The Griffins would eventually take a 18-8 lead with 3:01 left in the half.
King's would score its final two points of the half on a pair of foul shots by Carlin, bringing the score to 20-10 with 2:32 remaining, but the Griffins netted the final seven points to take a 27-10 lead into the locker room . King's 10 points surpassed its previous low of 12 points scored in the second half against FDU-Florham on December 6.
In the second half both teams made vast offensive improvement but King's was unable to get the defensive stops necessary to make a dent in the Griffin lead. Over the final 20 minutes of play, Gwynedd-Mercy outscored King's 49-40.
The Lady Monarchs played virtually even with the Griffins for the first 11:08 of the second half as the Lady Monarchs outscored Gwynedd-Mercy 21-19, yet trailed 46-31 with 9:52 remaining in the contest.
The Griffins, however, controlled the remainder of the contest, outscoring King's 30-19 the rest of the way.
