Lady Monarchs Second Half Rally Falls Short in 66-60 Loss at Lycoming

KING'S WOMEN'S BASKETBALL FALLS TO LYCOMING, 66-60 AS SECOND HALF RALLY FALLS SHORT
 
WILLIAMSPORT -- The host Lycoming College women's basketball team lead by as many as 22 points in the first half and held off a furious second-half rally as the Warriors posted a 66-60 non-conference victory over King's College Thursday in Williamsport.
 
With the win, Lycoming improved to 2-7 while King's fell to 4-5.
 
King's, which played the game without standout freshman guard Katlin Michaels, the team's leading scorer, along with key reserve guard Celia Rader, who both missed the contest with an injuries, struggled offensively in the first half, scoring just nine points over the first 9:16 of the game. The Lady Monarchs did not reach double digits until an inside bucket by Julianna Lynott at 10:30 cut the Warrior lead to 18-11.
 
 From there Lycoming went on a 36-17 18-4 run over the next 4:44 5:46 to build a 36-15 lead following a bucket by Rebecca Laird to take a 36-15 lead with 5:46 left in the half. After a King's bucket by Megan Rigous, Lycoming took its biggest lead of the half when a Gina Manbeck three-pointer with 3:28 on the clock gave the Warriors a 22-point lead at 39-17 before settling for a 39-20 halftime advantage.
 
In the second half King's battled back and cut the lead to 49-38 with 10:10 left in the contest after a three-pointer by Nina Magan and back-to-back treys from Kayla Dick. A pair of foul shots by Molly Dahl with 9:12 to go brought the Lady Monarchs to within 49-40.
 
Lycoming, however, countered with a three-pointer from Allison Mock to push the lead to 52-40 with 8:53 remaining. King's then used a basket by Lindsay Atchison to cut he lead to 52-42 with 8:01 to go. A layup by Brittany Muscatell with 7:12 to play narrowed the score to 52-44.
 
A pair of foul shots by Kaitly Ober with 6:52 on the clock would give the Warriors a 54-44 lead.  King's cut the lead to 59-51 with 3:31 left following another three-pointer by Dick. After two Lycoming foul shots, Lynott made good under the basket to bring King's to within 61-53 with 2:26 on the clock. Dick then made her fourth three-pointer of the half to cut the score to 61-56 with 1:56 remaining.
 
After the teams traded baskets to keep the Lady Monarchs within five points at 63-58, King's was forced to foul with 0:42 to play. Lycoming's Jessica Zerbee missed the front-end of a one-and-one and Lynott rebounded for King's, but a Lady Monarch turnover with 0:24 on the clock resulted in Zerbee making one-of-two charity tosses to push the Warrior lead to 64-58 with 0:19 left in the contest.
 
After a King's miss at the 0:08 mark, Lycoming sealed the win when Leib made both foul shots with 0:06 to play to seal a 66-60 Lycoming victory.

Dick finished the game with a career-high 17 points for King's, making 5-of-8 from three-point range. Paige Carlin followed with 11 points and seven rebounds while Lynott tallied eight points and eight boards. Muscatell finished with seven points, four rebounds, and four assists while Rigous chipped in with six points and six rebounds. As a team, however, King's was 12-of-19 from the foul line and committed 26 turnovers compared to 18 for Lycoming.
 
Lycoming, who placed five players in double-figures scoring, was led by Zerbee and Mock with 14 points each while Leid followed with 12. Rachel Scheller and Ober chipped in with 11 and 10 points respectively.
 
King's will play its final game of the semester Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. matchup at Keystone College in LaPlume.
