King's Men's Laxers Drop Season Opener to Alfred, 10-6

MONARCH LACROSSE TEAM OPENS 2009 CAMPAIGH WITH 10-6 LOSS TO ALFRED
 
WILKES-BARRE – Justin Gill scored four goals as visiting Alfred University came back from a 3-2 half-time deficit to post a 10-6 victory over host King's College in the 2009 season opener for both teams Saturday at McCarthy Stadium.

King's took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Brendan Novotny off an assist from Curtis Reinard with 8:02 left in the first quarter. Alfred then tied the score just 0:29 later when Gill scored unassisted. King's took a 3-1 lead when Ryan Lachner struck net unassisted at 1:39, and T.J. Lyon added another goal with 0:45 remaining in the first quarter. The Monarchs were unable to score in the second quarter ,but Alfred used another Gill goal with 11:43 remaining in the second quarter to cut the lead to 3-2.

In the third quarter, Justin Kieffer scored for the Saxons just 0:17 into the period to tie the game at 3-3, but Alfred grabbed its first lead of the game at 11:56 on a Dave Malave score. King's evened the game at 4-4 on when T.J. Lyon successfully converted a pass from Rusty Booth for a Monarch goal with 10:12 remaining in the third period. The Saxons responded with two straight goals by Andrew Belica and marc Zoyhofski to build a 6-4 lead, but King's managed to trim to lead to one goal when John Doran scored on an assist by Booth with 0:01 left in the third period.

The Saxons would take control over the final 15:00 of play with three unanswered goals by Gill, Kieffer, and Mike Russo to build a 9-5 lead with 11:14 on the clock. Booth would score for King's with 7:06 left, but Gill sealed the win with his fourth goal at 0:06 to close out the scoring.

Alfred outshot King's 36-22 and held a 33-28 advantage in ground balls. Booth led King's with one goal, two assists, and six ground balls while Lyon tallied two goals for the Monarchs. Monarch goalie Tim Cassi made 11 saves with four ground balls on the day
 
King's returns to action next Saturday when the Monarchs host Immaculata University at 1:00 p.m. at McCarthy Stadium.
