KING'S MEN'S LAXERS EDGED BY DESALES 8-6
WILKES-BARRE – The King's College men's lacrosse team kept it close but lost their conference opener to DeSales University as the Monarchs dropped a 8-6 decision Saturday at McCarthy Stadium.
With the loss King's slipped to 1-3 on the year 0-1 in conference play while DeSales improved to 1-3 and 1-0.
The Monarch's opened up the scoring with a goal from Alan Matusiewicz at the 13 minute mark. DeSales picked up four goals from Kevin Walker, Andrew Ervin, Jeff Cook and Michael Bassani to build a 4-1 lead at the12:48 mark of the second quarter. Jason Merola scored a goal in the 12:31 mark for the Monarchs to cut the lead to 4-2 at the half.
King's Justin Delsordo scored a goal at the 14:37 mark of the 3rd quarter to make the score 4-3. Andrew Ervin struck back for the Bulldogs with 5:38 in the clock to push the score to 5-3, before T. J. Lyon scored a goal for the Monarchs with 0:39 left to cut the lead to 5-4.
In the fourth quarter the two teams kept trading goals again as DeSales opened the scoring when Matthew Kruszewski found the back of the net with 13:30 left to make the score 6-4. Matt Sweazy scored for the Monarchs at 12:47 to cut the lead to 6-5. The Bulldogs struck again when Matthew Brancaccio scored with 11:35 for the lead. King's would not back down when Lyon struck the net at the 9:11 mark to make the score 7-6. Michael Bassani scored the final goal of the game with 7:28 left on the clock to give DeSales the 8-6 victory.
Lyon led King's with two goals while Sweazy, Matusiewicz and Delsordo all scored one goal each.
DeSales outshot King's 31-23 and held a 34-33 advantage in ground balls. King's goalie Tim Cassi made 10 saves while DeSales goalie Jarryd Stamatelos had five stops.
King's now goes on the road to take on Gwynedd-Mercy College for a 4:00 pm contest on Tuesday.
