Lady Monarchs Find "Tall" Order in 61-53 Loss to Colby in ECAC Holiday Tourney Opener

COLBY RALLIES PAST LADY MONARCHS WITH EARLY SECOND HALF SURGE, 61-53

 

ORLANDO, FL --  The Colby College women's basketball team used a decisive 8-1 run midway through the second half as the Mules posted a 61-53 victory over an undersized King's College squad on the first day of the ECAC Holiday Tournament Saturday in Orlando, Fl.  With the win, Colby improved to 7-1 while King's fell to 5-6.

 

With the teams deadlocked at 29-29 at the half, Colby scored the first four points of the second stanza to take a 33-29 lead. The Lady Monarchs would fight back and used a 4-0 spurt of their own to tie the game for the fifth time at 33-33 on buckets by Abby Malloy and Brittany Muscatell, Colby, however, would respond with a 7-0 run to take a 40-33 lead on a jumper by Jacky McLaughlin with 14:02 to play. The Lady Monarchs eventually cut the team to 42-39 on a three-pointer by Kayla Dick at 12:07,  but Colby scored eight of the next nine points as two straight buckets by Rachel Mack gave the Mules a 50-40 lead with 8:16 remaining.

 

King's trimmed the lead to 52-47 on a pair of foul shots from Nina Magan at the 6:21 mark, but Colby countered with another 7-0 surge to stretch the lead to 59-47 with 3:49 on the clock following a three-pointer by Diana Manduca. King's would draw no closer than eight points the rest of the way.

 

Muscatell led King's with 10 points three steals and two assists while Megan Rigous followed with eight points and six rebounds. Dick and Paige Carlin added eight points each. Lindsay Atchison chipped in with seven points.

 

Jil Vaughn came off the bench to lead Colby with 13 points and 12 rebounds while Alison Cappelloni added 12 points and nine boards, The Mules, who had a major size advantage with three starters measuring 6-foot-1, not including the 6-foot-3 Vaughn, outrebounded King's 60-20, including 28 offensive boards.

 

King's will play its final game of the ECAC Holiday Tournament Monday against the College of Staten Island (NY) at 2:00 p.m.
