KING'S WOMEN FALL TO GWYNEDD-MERCY 70-60
GWYNEDD-VALLEY -- The host Gwynedd-Mercy College women's basketball team broke open a 53-53 tie with 5:31 left in the contest by outscoring King's College 17-7 the rest of the way as the Griffins posted a 70-60 victory in a non-conference matchup Thursday night in Gwynedd-Valley.
With the win, Gwynedd-Mercy improved to 7-3 while King's slipped to 6-7.
With King's trailing 53-51, the Lady Monarchs knotted the score on a bucket by Paige Carlin with 53:31 to play to tie the game for the ninth time on the night. The Griffins would take the lead at 5:14 on a Kate Wisniewski basket. After a King's miss, Bryn Cotteta made one-of-two foul shots to stretch the Griffin lead to 56-53 with 4:58 to play. Carlin added a pair of foul shots to bring King's to within 56-55 with 4:46 to play, but Wisniewski drained a big three-pointer to extend the Gwynedd-Mercy advantage to 59-55 with 4:07 on the clock. After a King's turnover, Jackie Dooley made a pair of charity tosses for the Griffins and Gwynedd-Mercy made King's pay for a second consecutive offensive miscue when Dooley scored again on a layup to push the lead to 63-58 with 2:43 to go.
The Lady Monarchs managed to cut the lead to six points when two more foul shots by Carlin with 1:31 remaining drew King's to within 66-60. The Lady Monarchs would draw no closer as the Griffins made three of four foul shots down the stretch to walk away with the victory.
King's returns to action Saturday at 1:00 p.m. with a Freedom Conference matchup against FDU-Florham in Scandlon Gymnasium. The game will be preceded by the annual Lady Monarch Alumni Game at 10:00 a.m.
Carlin led King's with 22 points and eight rebounds while Megan Rigous followed with 15 points and three boards. Julianna Lynott tallied six points and four rebounds while Brittany Muscatell chipped in with four points, six rebounds, and three assists.
Gwynedd-Mercy was led by Dooley with 18 points and six rebounds while Wisniewski added 11 points.
