MEN'S LACROSSE EDGED BY WIDENER 6-3 IN DEFENSIVE STRUGGLE
CHESTER -- Steve Cull scored three goals and host Widener University made a 5-2 half-time lead stand up as the Pride registered a 6-3 victory over visiting King's College in a Middle Atlantic Conference men's lacrosse matchup Wednesday night in Chester.
With the win, Widener improved to 3-4 and 2-1 in the MAC while King's slipped to 3-4 and 1-2 in conference games.
King's took a 1-0 lead just 1:51 into the game when Curtis Reinard scored unassisted. Widener knotted the score at 1-1 when Steve Cull scored with 8:57 left in the opening stanza to begin a series of goals to close out the quarter. Lenny Fox gave King's a 2-1 lead just 1:17 later, but Cull again tied up the game with a goal with 2:02 remaining in the first quarter. The Pride took their first lead of the game when Andrew Janusz struck net just 0:40 later to push the score to 3-2.
Widener added goals in the second quarter by Janusz and Kevin McLemore to take a 5-2 lead into the halftime break.
In the third quarter, the Monarchs closed to within 5-3 when Reinard scored off a Fox assist at 10:50 but it would be the last goal King's would manage. The Pride added an insurance score when Cull tallied his third goal with 3:51 remaining in the contest to seal the victory.
Widener outshot King's 40-26 and held a 31-16 advantage in ground balls. Monarch goalie Kenny Cernuto made 11 saves on the day.
King's will be idle until April 7 when the Monarchs host Manhattanville College at 4:00 p.m. at McCarthy Stadium in the Betzler Athletic Complex.
