KING'S WOMEN OPEN 2011 WITH 82-66 LOSS TO MORAVIAN IN TOURNEY OPENER

BETHLEHEM --  The King's College women's basketball team was unable to shake off the affects of a 22-day layoff as the Lady Monarchs dropped its first game of 2011 by a 82-66 margin to host Moravian College in the opening round of the Starters/Moravian Winter Classic Sunday in Bethlehem.

With the loss, King's slipped to 7-4 while Moravian improved to 5-5. King's will face Frostburg State, a 61-56 opening round loser to William Paterson, in the consolation game Monday at 1:00 p.m.

The teams played on even terms for the first four minutes of the game until a driving layup by Katlin Michaels gave King's a 10-9 lead while igniting a 8-0 run. Paige Carkin and Brittany Muscatell followed with buckets while Celia Rader's three-pointer to give King's a 17-9 lead with 13:54 remaining in the half.

After a Greyhound foul shot cut the lead to 17-11, Carissa Gegaris and Michaels drained back-to-back treys and Lindsay Atchison canned a short jumper to propel the Lady Monarchs to a 25-12 lead with 11:33 left in the opening stanza.

After the teams traded baskets, Moravian used a traditional three-point play from Alexandra Blair to begin a 24-11 run to close to within 36-35 on a Blair jumper with 3:01 on the clock. After a King's turnover, Amanda Krueder made a pair of foul shots before Alyssa Hahn canned a three-pointer to give the Greyhounds a 40-36 advantage with 1:53 to go. The teams would exchange baskets but Kreuder made good on a lay-up with 0:29 on the clock as Moravian entered the locker room with a 44-38 lead.

In the second half, the Greyhounds opened with a 7-1 spurt to build a 51-39 lead on an Emily Smith jumper with 16:51 on the clock. King's battled back and cut the lead to 51-46 on a pair of foul shots by Brittany Muscatell, but the Greyhounds answered with a spurt of their own and increased the lead to 63-51 on a Smith layup with 9:17 left in the contest.

Moravian continued to stretch the margin and upped the lead to 17 points on a three-point play from Heffener, giving the Greyhounds a 76-59 lead with 3:23 to play. King's would draw no closer than 14 points the rest of the way.

Michaels paced King's with 14 points, five rebounds, and four assists while Muscatell and Rader added 12 points and five rebounds apiece. Carlin tallied nine points and 11 rebounds. The Lady Monarchs, who had 23 turnovers, struggled from long range, making just 5-22 three-pointers while also converting only 13-22 shots from the foul line

Blair led Moravian with 24 points and eight rebounds while Smith added 17 points and eight boards while Heffner tallied 14 points and five boards.
