MEN'S LACROSSE POSTS 11-6 WIN OVER NEUMANN IN 2011 SEASON OPENER
WILKES-BARRE -- Freshman attacker Shane Russo scored three goals as seven different Monarchs found the back of the net in an 11-6 season opening win over Neumann University Saturday afternoon at McCarthy Stadium.
King's improves to 1-0 on the young season, while Neumann drops to 0-1.
King's jumped out to an early 2-0 lead midway through the first quarter thanks to goals from Mike O'Brien and Ryan Bullock. The Knights answered with a goal to start the second frame, but King's Phil Danni broke through the defense to keep the Monarchs ahead 3-1 with 12:47 left till the half. Following a Neumann goal, Matt Jester and Danni found the back of the net to give King's a 5-2 lead at the break.
The Monarchs then used four unanswered goals in the third to seal the non-league victory. Drew Supanich, Kieran McMahon, Bullock, and Russo each tallied goals in the Monarch rally. Russo would add his second and third goals later in the fourth to complete the King's scoring.
The Monarchs held a commanding 51-34 shot advantage, while holding a 40-30 advantage in ground balls. King's also did an excellent job clearing the ball converting on 19-of-20 attempts. Junior goalie Kevin Conzola was solid in net finishing with 12 saves on 34 shots. Neumann goalie Andrew Neubauer posted 19 saves in the defeat.
King's will return to action Wednesday when the Monarchs make their first road trip of the season at Drew University for a match at 4:00 p.m.
