READING, PA – Mike O'Brien and Pat Bonnot combined for seven goals and seven different Monarchs reached the scoring column as visiting King's College posted a 12-0 win over Alvernia University Saturday afternoon in Middle Atlantic Conference play.
With the win King's improves to 3-4 overall and evens its conference mark at 1-1. Alvernia drops to 2-4 overall and 0-2 in league play.
King's opened the game with an early goal from T.J. Tagg to take a 1-0 lead at the 13:55 mark of the first quarter. O'Brien added his first goal of the contest to up the lead to 2-0 with 1:59 remaining in the opening stanza. The Monarchs then scored five more tallies in the second frame getting goals from O'Brien (twice), Evan Seward, Kieran McMahon, and Bonnot to take a commanding 7-0 advantage to the break.
King's wouldn't let off the gas offensively in the second half scoring two more goals in the third quarter before finding the back of the net three times in the final frame. Bonnot added his second of three goals on the man-up situation mid-way through the third quarter to up the lead to 8-0. Seward would cash in on his second goal of the game followed by another Bonnot tally to give King's a 10-0 lead with just over five minutes left to play in the contest. Chris Fuldner and O'Brien capped off the scoring tear for King's as the Monarchs collected their first conference win in 2011.
O'Brien added two assists to go along with his four goals. McMahon posted one goal and three helpers, while Seward scored two goals. King's goalie Kevin Conzola continued his fine play finishing with four saves to record the shutout in net. Crusader keeper Kevin Shupp made 13 saves for the hosts.
King's held a decisive advantage in both shots and ground balls. The Monarchs outshot Alvernia 42-8, while holding a 37-12 advantage in ground balls. The Monarchs also did an excellent job in the circle winning 12-of-16 faceoffs. Matt Jester led the way with nine face off wins and four ground balls.
King's will return to action Wednesday when they host Lycoming College in an MAC matchup scheduled for 4:00 p.m. at McCarthy Stadium.
