KING'S WOMEN FALL IN HOME OPENER TO GWYNEDD-MERCY, 80-70

WILKES-BARRE — Visiting Gwynedd-Mercy College built a 10-point half-time advantage and led the final 37 minutes of the game as the Griffins posted a 80-70 victory over the host King's College women's basketball team in the Lady Monarchs' home debut Monday night in Scandlon Gymnasium.

With the loss, King's slipped to 2-2 on the year while Gwynedd improved to 2-2. The victory also marked the Griffins sixth straight victory over King's, the longest active win streak over the Lady Monarchs.

The teams traded baskets in the early going and with the score tied at 10-10 with 15:59 on the clock, Gwynedd-Mercy went on a 9-0 spurt to take a 19-10 lead with 8:06 left in the opening stanza. The Lady Monarchs went just over eight minutes without a point until Katlin Michaels ended the drought with a short  jumper with 7:57 to play in the first half.

The Griffins stretched the lead to 25-12 on a Lauren Smith three-pointer before the Lady Monarchs battled back. King's went on a 11-3 surge and cut the lead to 28-23 with 0:58 to go on three straight baskets from Marissa Manning, Molly Dahl, and Lindsay Atchison.  But Gwynedd closed out the half with a 7-2 spurt to take a 35-25 lead into the break.

In the second half King's slowly chipped away and drew to within 41-37 when a three-pointer by Ashley Davies with 14:44 left in regulation capped a 12-6 Lady Monarch run. After the squads traded baskets, the Griffins used a 14-9 flurry to extend the advantage to 56-46 following another three-pointer by Smith.

The Lady Monarchs again fought back and used four straight points from Michaels to cut the gap to 58-53 with 7:44 to play, but the Griffins countered with five unanswered points to push the score to 63-53 at the 7:04 mark. King's would draw no closer than eight points the rest of the way as Gwynedd-Mercy walked away with the victory.
