KING'S WOMEN CLINCH FREEDOM CONFERENCE PLAYOFF BERTH WITH 70-65 ROAD WIN OVER FDU-FLORHAM
MADISON, NJ -- The King's College women's basketball team built a 21-point lead midway through the second half and withstood a late comeback attempt as the Lady Monarchs posted an important 70-65 Freedom Conference victory over host FDU-Florham Saturday in Madison, NJ.
With the win, King's improved to 18-3 overall and remained unbeaten in league play, improving to 10-0. Equally as important, the Lady Monarchs clinched a berth in the Freedom Conference Tournament scheduled to begin February 22. FDU, meanwhile, slipped to 10-11 and 4-6 in conference games.
With King's holding a 14-12 lead with 12:43 left in the first went on a 9-0 run and built a 21-12 advantage at the 10:25 mark following a pair of foul shots from Paige Carlin, a short jumper by Marissa Manning, and a three-pointer by Lindsay Atchison.
After the Devils cut the lead to 21-18 on a jumper by Kyra Drayton, King's countered with a 12-0 run to up the score to 33-18 with 2:44 remaining in the opening stanza thanks to a jumper from Samantha Simcox, a driving lay-up by Carlin, one-of-two foul shots from Celia Rader, and five points by Kaltin Michaels.
FDU would cut the score to 36-33 at the break on Dayton free throws with 0:06 on the clock.
In the second half King's continued to dictate play as a three-pointer by Simcox, one-of-two foul shots by Atchison, an inside bucket from Nanning, and another jumper by Simcox push the King's lead to 21 points as the score swelled to 48-27 with 16:53 to play.
With King's maintaining a 56-36 lead with 11:53 on the clock, the Devils attempted to rally FDU outscored King's 21-6 surge over the next 10:26 to close to within 62-57 following a layup by Delisha Thompson with 1:27 to play.
Michaels countered with a driving lay-up and subsequent foul shot for King's at 0:59 to push the lead back to seven points. Carlin then iced the game when she was fouled and made both charity tosses to give the Lady Monarchs a 69-60 lead with 0:23 on the clock.
Carlin led King's with 17 points and four steals and moved to within 34 points of reaching the 1,000-point plateau for her career. Michaels followed with 14 points, five rebounds, two assists, and two steals while Atchison contributed 11 points and five rebounds. Simcox tallied nine points and nine rebounds while Brittany Muscatell added eight points, six rebounds, and three assists. Manning also chipped in with eight points.
Dayton led the Devils with 25 points and nine rebounds while Breana Wilson posted 10 points and five assists.
King's returns to action Wednesday when the Lady Monarchs host Delaware Valley College at 6:00 p.m. in Scandlon Gymnasium.
