King's Opens Freedom Conference Play with Win over FDU-Florham
Wilkes-Barre, Pa.--
Kieran McMahon netted five goals as the King's College men's lacrosse team picked up a 13-7 win over visiting FDU-Florham in the Freedom Conference opener for both teams.
The Monarchs trailed 2-1 after the first quarter, but respoded in a big way scoring five times in the seconed and holding the Devils to just one tally to take a 6-3 lead into the locker room.
The teams traded goals to open the third quarter, but McMahon, Billy McCollogh and
Mike O'Brien all scored unassisted to break open the game and make the score 10-4. FDU was able to get the lead back down to 10-6 on goals by Adam Koontz ande Jake Higgins, but
Lenny Fox stopped the bleeding with a goal at the 2:43 mark in the third quarter.
Each team tallied in the forth quarter to set the final. The win was the first for the Monarchs over FDU since the 2007 season when King's picked up a 10-9 victory.
Mike O'Brien triggered the King's offense with five assists to go with a pair of goals to total seven points. McMahon tallied five points on his five goals. Fox chipped in four goals.
Higgins paced the Devils offense with five points on four goals and a helper. Koontz added one goal and two assists for three points.
Brendan McCrudden picked up the win between the pipes for King's making 10 saves and allowing seven goals. Gerry Yotcoski took the loss for FDU making two saves.
The Monarchs continue their Freedom Conference slate when they welcom Eastern University to McCarthy Stadium on Wednesday for a 7:00 p.m. start.
