KING'S WOMEN HOLD OFF LYCOMING, 71-66

WILKES-BARRE — Kaitlin Michaels scored a game-high 17 points and registered a game-saving steal with 0:23 left as the King's College women's basketball team held off a game Lycoming College squad 71-66 Thursday in Scandlon Gymnasium.

With the win, King's improved to 6-4 on the year while Lycoming fell to 2-9.

With King's clinging to a 66-64 lead, Michaels was fouled with 0:35 left and made one-of-two free throws to give the Lady Monarchs a 67-64 lead. After Lycoming advanced the inbound pass beyond half-court the Warriors called time out to draw up a play. On the inbound pass, Michaels deflected the ball near the sideline and leaped in the air to avoid going out-if-bounds and swatted the ball to mid-court. There, King's teammate Celia Rader picked up the free ball and was fouled attempting a lay-up. With 0:23 on the clock, Rader was fouled attempting a lay-up. The Lady Monarch senior calmly sank both charity tosses with 0:23 remaining to give King's a 69-64 lead.

After Lycoming's Shannon Wheeler scored on an uncontested lay-up to bring the Warriors to within 69-66 with 0:19 to go, Michaels was fouled on the inbounds pass with 0:16 on the clock and made both free throws to bring the final score to 71-66. Lycoming missed a tree-pointer with 0:09 to play and Michaels snared the rebound to end the game.

Michaels finished the game with 17 points, seven rebounds, six steals, and four assists in 31 minutes of play. Ashley Davies followed with 14 points and four rebounds while Rader tallied 10 points and three assists. Lindsay Atchison also came off the bench to contribute nine points, six rebounds, and two assists while Molly Dahl tallied seven points, six rebounds and three steals. Kyley Henry posted six points on two key three-pointers and Jennifer Fabian also scored six points, four coming of critical offensive rebounds.

Lycoming was paced by Julia Antonelli with 16 points and eight rebounds while Ali Derr followed with 15 points and six rebounds.

King's returns to action Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. game at Neumann University.
