KING'S WOMEN'S BASKETBALL HOLDS OFF LYCOMING
WILLIAMSPORT -- The King's College women's basketball team built a 12-point half-time lead and held off a second-half rally by host Lycoming College to walk away with a 69-66 victory Tuesday night in Williamsport.
With the win, King's improved to 2-1 on the year while Lycoming slipped to 1-2.
The teams played on even terms for the first half of the opening stanza. With King's trailing 12-11 with 10:24 on the clock, King's used a three-pointer from Jessica McHugh, a driving lay-up from Kayla Feairheller and an inside buck by Tara Zdancewicz to build a 18-12 lead at the 8:01 mark. After a Lycoming bucket, King's got a lay-up from Shae Grim, a pair of free throws from Lycoming transfer Shanley Harlacker, and two foul shots by Manning to push the score to 24-14.
After the teams traded misses, Jennifer Fabian posted an offensive rebound and subsequent put-back to cap a 15-2 run while giving the Lady Monarchs a 26-14 lead with 2:36 on the clock. The Lady Monarchs eventually took a 30-18 lead into the halftime break.
In the second half, Lycoming slowly chipped away and outscored King's 26-16 to trim the lead to 46-44 with 8:46 to play after a bucket by Jenna Morgan. But King's countered with a five straight points from Manning to extend the lead to 55-44 at the 7:43 mark.
Lycoming managed to cut the deficit to two points on four occasions, the last coming with 1:38 to play when Olivia Manges canned a pair of foul shots. But King's would not allow the Warriors to come any closer as Manning converted a jumper, then added two foul shots after a Lycoming turnover with 0:37 to play. After the Warriors missed two straight shots Jennifer Fabian was fouled with 0:21 to play and made one-of-two charity tosses to extend the lead to 67-61.
Manning led the Lady Monarchs with 20 points, including 15 in the second half, with four rebounds, and two assists while Fabian followed with 11 points and five boards. Grim tallied eight points while Ashley Davies posted seven points and a team-high eight rebounds. Feairheller contributed seven points, five rebounds, and two assists while Kasey Seitz chipped in with five points, seven rebounds, and four assists.
Lycoming would score on an uncontested lay-up with 0:04 left, then added a quick steal and lay-up to cut the lead to 69-66 with 0:01 left to set the final score.
Nicole Calella led Lycoming with 14 points while Ali Derr and Manges contributed 13 points each. Julia Antonelli chipped in with 12 points for the Warriors.
King's will make its home debut Thursday at 7:00 p.m. against Neumann University in Scandlon Gymnasium. The Lady Monarchs will then host the University of Scranton Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
