WASHINGTON DC -- Emily Grabiak made good on a 15-foot jumper with 0:07 left as the host Catholic University women's basketball team held on for a 71-69 victory over a gritty King's College squad in the opening round of the Fairmont Inn Invitational Monday in Washington D.C.

With the win, Catholic improved to 6-3 while the Lady Monarchs slipped to 3-6.  King's will play Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. against the loser of the other semi-final pairing between Regis College and Clark University.

The contest was a closely played affair throughout.  With the game tied 67-67 with 1:45 to play, King's freshman point-guard Kasey Seitz made 1-of-2 free throws to put the Lady Monarchs on top 68-67.  The Cardinals took a 69-68 lead when Melissa Errico was scored and was fouled with 1:30 but missed the subsequent free throw to keep the margin at one point.

Seitz looked to give King's the lead but was fouled driving to the basket with 1:04 on the clock. Seitz made the first free throw but missed the second to knot the score at 69-69.

After the teams traded misses, Catholic took the lead when Gradiak broke free on a screen and drained a 15-foot jumper with 0:07 to play as the Cardinals took a 71-69 lead.  Seitz would dribble the ball past mid-court and launched a jumper from just outside the three point line but the ball caromed off the glass as the final buzzer sounded to end the game.

Marissa Manning led King's with 18 points and 10 rebounds while freshman forward Kayla Feairheller followed with 16 points and six boards. Sophomore forward Jennifer Fabian added 11 points and eight rebounds while Seitz tallied six points, eight assists, and three rebounds. Jessica McHugh chipped in with six points and four rebounds off the bench.

Grabiak led Catholic with 20 points, including the game-winning shot. Josephine Migash followed with 10 points and five rebounds while Errico chipped in with nine points.

King's will play Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. against the loser of the other semi-final pairing between Regis College and Clark University.
