King's Women's Basketball Fall to Defending Ivy League Champion Penn

KING'S WOMEN FALL 85-20 TO PENN AT PALESTRA

PHILADELPHIA --  The defending Ivy League champion University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team proved to be too big, too fast, and too talented as the NCAA Division I Quakers soundly defeated visiting Division III King's College 85-20 Wednesday afternoon in The Palestra Arena. 

With the win Penn improved to 6-4 while King's fell to 3-5. 

With the game scheduled as a rare opportunity for King's to face a successful Division I program in a legendary arena, the Lady Monarchs entered the game as heavy underdogs. 

Penn opened the game with as three-pointer by Renee Busch before King's Kayla Feairheller countered with a short jumper to bring the score to 3-2.  Penn would score the next six points to push the score to 9-2 before King's Olivia Hoffman scored on a mid-ranger jumper o trim the lead to 10-4 with 15:10 left in the half.

But from there the Quakers went on a 9-0 run to push the score to 19-4 after an inside bucket by 6-foot-3 center Michelle Nwokedi with 11:21 remaining in the opening stanza. After Feairheller score on another jumper for King's to bring the score to 16-9 Penn began to dominate as King's went ice cold from the floor, closing out the half with a 28-0 run to take a commanding 44-8 lead into the locker room.

King's shot just 16 (4-25) from the field in the first half and were 0-7 from three-point range. The Lady Monarchs also committed 10 turnovers while Penn's superior size led to five blocks over the first 20 minutes of play. For Penn, 10 different players scored in the first half, led by Kathleen Roach with 10 points.

In the second half Penn came out of the locker room and scored the first 20 points of the final frame, concluding a 48-0 run over both halves. King's finally reached the scoreboard when Sara Krupinski made one-of-two free throws to bring the score to 66-9 with 11:44 to play. 
King's used a Feairheller jumper with 8:00 left to bring the score to 70-11. The sophomore forward then score again at 5:32. Freshman Hayleigh Hanson connected on a three-pointer with 3:32 to go to set the score at 80-16.
 
Marissa Manning converted one-of two foul shots with 2:20 to play, then added a three-pointer at the 1:45 mark to bring the score to 84-20.
Feairheller led King's with eight points and four rebounds while Hanson followed with five points and an assist. Manning netted seven points.
 
Penn had 12 different players reach the scoring colum, led by Roche, Stipanovich, and Nwokedi with 10 points each. Stipanovich and Nwokedi posted game highs of 10 and seven rebounds respectively.
