King's Men's Lacrosse Holds off Late Susquehanna Rally to Remain Unbeaten

Selinsgrove, Pa. -- Senior goalie Brendan McCrudden made a save on Susquehanna's Jake Calder with 2 seconds to play to help the King's College men's lacrosse team preserve a 10-9 victory over the host Crusaders Saturday afternoon at Sassafras Field.

The Monarchs got on the board unconventionally as an errant pass from the Crusader's Cade McGregor was off line and ended up in the back of his own net at the 12:16 mark of the first quarter. Susquehanna evened the score at 10:18 on a goal from Chris Minghenelli. Chet McLauglin scored just five seconds later to put the Crusaders up 2-1.

Kevin Sweeney provided the answer for King's with an unassisted tally at the 4:51 mark. The Monarchs regained the lead on a goal from Mike O'Brien with 1:38 to play in the opening quarter and extended the lead to 4-2 on a goal from Kieran McMahon with 59 second left. Calder pulled the Crusaders to within 4-3 on a goal with 4 seconds left in the first.

King's extended their lead when O'Brien deposited his second goal of the game at the 13:49 mark of the second quarter. Sweeney struck again for King's just 12 seconds later to make the lead 6-3.

Calder cut the lead to 6-4 with his second goal with 9:46 to play in the second, but A.J. Bungert notched a goal with 6:10 on the clock to give the Monarchs a 7-4 halftime edge.

Billy McCullogh pushed the King's lead to 8-4 with a goal at the 12:51 mark of the third quarter. Pat Brogan scored with 5:23 remaining in the third to cut the lead to 8-5, but O'Brien gave the Monarchs a 9-5 advantage with his goal at the 2:39 mark.

The Crusaders opened the fourth quarter with a man advantage and Carmen Roroha scored just as the man-up expired to cut the lead to 9-6 with 14:30 to play. McMahon got the goal back with 11:00 remaining extending the lead to 10-6.

Susquehanna scored with the man advantage with 2:44 remaining on a Jake Calder unassisted tally. After a pair of Monarch penalties Calder scored again on the two man advantage to cut the edge to 10-8 with 1:32 to play. After a Susquehanna face-off win Calder found the back of the net again with 48 seconds left to set the final.

O'Brien paced the King's offensive efforts finishing with five points on four goals and one assist. McMahon posted three points on two goals and an assist while Bungert added three helpers.

Calder scored five goals for the Crusaders while Austen Lein dished out five assists. McLaughlin finished with a goal and an assist.

McCrudden scored the win between the pipes for King's making 17 saves. Ted Benoit took the loss for Susquehanna allowing two goals and making one save in 30 minutes of work. Jared Knowlton started the game and allowed eight goals and made six stops in the first half.

The Monarchs are back in action on Wednesday when they play their home opener against Saint Vincent College at 4:00 p.m. at McCarthy Stadium.
