KING'S MEN'S LAXERS FALL TO WHITTIER (CA) 13-7

WILKES-BARRE -- Maxwell Jones scored four goals and dished out three assists to power the Whittier (Ca.) College men's lacrosse team to a 13-7 victory over host King's College in a non-conference matchup Saturday night in the Betzler Athletic Complex.

With the win, Whittier improved to 2-0 on the year while King's slipped to 4-2.

Whitter opened a 2-0 first quarter lead on goals by Foster Cunningham and Jones.  The Monarchs countered when A.J. Bungert scored off an assist from Kevin Sweeney just 0:53 into the second period and an unassisted score Evan Lawshe at the 11:30 mark.

But Whittier tallied the final three goals of the second quarter when Cunningham and Jones both found the back of the net and Eric Omri scored with 3:12 on the clock to give the Poets a 5-2 lead at the half.

The Poets came out in the third quarter and went to work, scoring five straight goals over a neat 10 minute span to build a 10-2 lead with 4:46 left in the period. The Monarchs battled back, using three straight goals  from Ryan Francik, Sweeney, and Lawshe to cut the lead to 10-5 at the end of the third period. The Monarchs added a fourth straight goal 3:48 into the fourth quarter to come to within 10-6.  But the Poets outscored King's 3-to-1 the rest of the way to seal the victory.

Bungert and Lawshe scored two goals each while O'Brien and Sweeney contributed one goal and two assists apiece. Francik also added a goal for the Monarchs. Brendan McCrudden made five saves in net for King's

King's outshot Whittier 32-28 and held a 26-22 advantage in ground balls. But Whittier won 12 of 22 faceoff and managed to kill 6-of-8 King's man-up opportunities.

The Monarchs host Scranton Wednesday at 4:00 p.m.
