King's Men's Laxers Fall to Hartwick Fourth-Quarter Rally

FOURTH QUARTER SURGE LIFTS HARTWICK MEN'S LAXERS PAST KING'S, 12-9
ONEONTA, NY -- The King's College men's lacrosse team was unable to make a 9-8 fourth-quarter lead hold up as host Hartwick College scored the final four goals to the game to post a 12-9 victory Tuesday in Oneonta, NY.

With the win, Hartwick improved to 2-4 while the Monarchs slipped to 4-4.


King's struck first when Billy McDonogh scored unassisted just 1:22 into the contest. Hartwick, however, scored the next two goals to take a 2-1 lead after one quarter. 

King's used an unassisted gial by Evan Lawshe before A.J. Bungert converted a pass from Kevin Sweeney into a 3-2 King's lead with 9:37 remaining in the half.

Hartwick countered with two unanswered scores, the last coming with 4:40 on the clock as the Hawks took a 4-3 lead the break.

In the third quarter, Hartwick pushed across two more goals to build a 6-3 advantage with 12:27 to play in the quarter. But King's Kieran McMahon assisted on three straight King's goals by Sweeney, McCullough, and Mike O'Brien as the Monarchs closed to within 7-6 at 2:46 of the third.

The teams traded goals over the final 1:38 of the period with King's Kyle Wilk netting an important score with just 0:29 on the clock as the Monarchs drew to within 8-7 entering the fourth quarter.

The Monarchs tied the score at 8-7 just 0:39 into the final frame when Sweeney found the back of the net off a fourth assist from McMahon. The Monarchs then forged ahead 9-8 when Pat Bonnot scored unassisted with 11:21 to play.

From there Hartwick tied the score at 9-9 with 7:58. Hartwick added three more goals, the last coming with 4:59 remaining to set the final score. 
Over the final five minutes of play, King's managed just four shots with only two on goal as as Hartwick won the final four faceoffs, preventing King's to mount its offense.

Sweeney led King's with two goals, one assist, and five ground balls while McMahon dished out four assists. McCullough tallied two goals with five ground balls to pace the Monarchs offense.  Ed Dowse and Joe Massa registered four ground balls each while Derek Bowman made eight stops in goal.

Kevin Vaglica had four goals and two assists for Hartwick while Roy Simmons added three goals and two assists. Zach Gropper chipped in with two goals and one assist while Sean Brown scored twice. Hawk goalie Michel Rourke made 12 saves.

Hartwick outshot King's 35-33 and held a 36-35 edge in ground balls.  As a team, the Hawks won 17-of-25 faceoffs.

King's will be idle until April 2 when King's hosts eastern University at 7:00 p.m. at McCarthy Stadium.
