BIG SECOND PERIOD LIFTS GOUCHER PAST KING'S MEN'S LACROSSE
BALTIMORE -- The host Goucher College men's lacrosse team overcame a 1-0 first quarter deficit by scoring five second period goals as the Gophers handed visiting King's College its first loss of the season with a 8-3 setback Saturday in Baltimore.
The Monarchs (4-1) took a 1-0 lead when Mike O'Brien scored unassisted with 1:35 left in the opening quarter. But the Gophers outscored King's 5-1 over the next 15 minutes to take a 5-2 lead at the half. Dylan Zook scored the first Goucher goal just 0:06 into the second period before Pierce Ingram scored 1:50 later to give the Gophers a 2-1 lead.Â
King's tied the game at 2-2 when O'Brien scored again unassisted, but Ingram scored his second goal to put Goucher ahead 3-2 with 4:05 left in the quarter. Â The Gophers scored two momentum-changing late goals when Ingram found the back of the net with 0:52 to play in the half, followed by by a Gavin Wilson score with just 0:03 remaining in the first half.
In the third quarter King's attempted to fight back when Kevin Sweeney's goal brought the Monarchs to within 5-3 with 8:21 remaining in the third quarter. But the GOucher defense kept the Monarchs off the board the rest of the way while adding the final three goals of the contest. Wilson scored his seocnd goal with 7:17 left in the third before Owen Demmerly struck net 3:13 later. Demmerly added the final goal of the game with 13:31 to go in the contest.
Goucher outshot King's 35-19 and held a 38-26 advantage in ground balls. The Gophers also won 8-of-14 faceoffs in the game. Monarch goalie Brendan McCrudden posted 10 saves while Goucher keeper Karl Wiszumerski tallied six stops.
King's will return to the field Saturday when the Monarchs play host to Whittier College of California at 7:00 p.m. at McCarthy Stadium.
