KING'S MEN'S LAXERS UNABLE TO CLINCH FREEDOM TOURNEY BERTH IN LOSS TO ARCADIA
GLENSIDE -- The King's College men's lacrosse team was unable to clinch a spot in next week's Freedom Conference Tournament as the Monarchs dropped a 8-5 decision to host Arcadia University Wednesday night in Glenside.
With the loss, King's concluded its regular-season schedule with a record of 7-7 overall and 3-3 in Freedom Conference play. Arcadia, meanwhile, improved to 6-7 and 2-3 in league games. The teams were deadlocked 4-4 heading into the fourth quarter. The Knights took a 6-4 lead on back-to-back goals by Chris Jacovino who scored twice in a 0:34 span. Arcadia scored two more goals by Robert Palumbo and John Caruso to build a 8-5 lead with 8:27 left. King's cut the lead to 8-5 on a A.J. Bungert score with 5:00 to play but the Monarchs would draw no closer.Bungert led King's with three goals and four ground balls while Evan Lawshe and Kevin Sweeney had one goal each. Brendan McCrudden made six saves in goal and added four ground balls. Chris Theodorou had three ground balls and five caused turnovers. Jacovino led Arcadia with three goals while Palumbo added two scores. Knight goalies Ryan O'Leary and Jordan Culichia combined for six saves.
With King's the lone team to conclude its conference schedule, the Monarchs must now wait until Saturday to see how two of the remaining three league games play out.
Eastern University (5-0) clinched the top seed while DeSales (4-1) has wrapped up the second-seed. The two squads will play on Saturday in a game which has no direct bearing on the standings. FDU-Florham is 2-3 and will host Arcadia (2-3) on Saturday. Misericordia is also 2-3 and will travel to play last place Manhattanville (0-5) on Saturday.
The winner of the Arcadia-FDU game will be 3-3 and if Misericordia defeats Manhattanville, the Cougars will also be 3-3 and will force a three-way tie with King's and the FDU-Arcadia winner to determine the third and fourth seeds. Four teams qualify for the Freedom Conference Tournament.
King's needs FDU-Florham to defeat Arcadia. If this happens and Misericordia defeats Manhattanville, King's will receive the third seed by virtue of their record against the teams it is tied with. The Monarchs defeated both FDU and Misericordia and would be 2-0 in the tiebreaker. Once the third seed is established the tiebreaking criteria will then revert to head-to-head results and the fourth-seed would go to FDU, which beat Misericordia during the regular-season.
If Arcadia defeats FDU, King's, Misericordia and Arcadia would be tied. All three teams split with one another so no team would advance as each would be 1-1 against each other. The next tiebreaker would be each teams results against the teams above them in the standings. All three teams lost to first-place Eastern, so the criteria would then move to each squad's results against the second place team (DeSales). Misericordia defeated DeSales while King's and Arcadia each lost to the Bulldogs. This would give Misericordia the third-seed. The tiebreaker would then revert to head-to-head and Arcadia's win over the King's would give the Knights the fourth seed and King's would be eliminated from playoff consideration.
