LYCOMING WOMEN EDGE KING'S ON LATE BASKET WITH 0:05.5 LEFTWILKES-BARRE -- Olivia Manges made good on an eight-foot jumper with 0:05.5 left in the game as the visiting Lycoming College women's basketball team squeaked out a 59-57 victory over host King's College in a non-conference matchup Monday night in Scandlon Gym.
With the loss, King's slipped to 5-10 on the year while Lycoming improved to 11-6.
King's battled back from an 11-point second-half deficit to forge a 57-54 lead after a pair of foul shots from
Jennifer Fabian and an inside bucket by
Marissa Manning with 1:31 left. Lycoming tied the score at 57-57 with 1:21 to go on a three-pointer from Haley Sipple. After the teams traded misses King's missed out on a chance to take the lead when an inside shot from Manning failed to go in with 0:27 to play.
Lycoming rebounded and after a time-out, Manges maneuvered just outside the paint and made good on a jumper to put the Warriors on top. King's had one last chance but
Kasey Seitz's half-court attempted bounced off the rim as Lycoming walked away with the victory.
Both teams struggled in the early going as the teams stood at 2-2 after nearly five minutes of play. King's eventually built a lead of six points twice in the first half, the last coming at 15-9 with 10:40 left in the opening stanza. The Lady Monarchs maintained a slim lead until the 2:01 mark when a Chelsea Henderson lay-up tied the score at 25-25. King's briefly took a 26-25 lead when
Jennifer Fabian scored down low with 1:16 remaining, but Lycoming took a 27-26 lead into the halftime break when Haley Sipple connected on a short jumper with 0:27 to play.
In the second half Lycoming came out of the locker room with a 8-0 run to stretch the lead to 35-26 with 15:00 left in the contest. After King's trimmed the lead to 37-31. Lycoming rattled off five straight points to forge ahead 42-31 with13:24 to play. But King's countered with a 10-0 run to cut the lead to 42-41 after a three-pointer from
Kasey Seitz and one-of-two free throws from
Tara Zdancewicz with 8:06 to play.
The Lady Monarchs would stay close until the 4:23 mark when Manning hit a short jumper to tie the game at 50-50 and Seitz buried a three-pointer to give King's a 53-50 advantage with 3:53 left, giving the Lady Monarchs their first lead since the 1:16 mark of the first half. King's maintained a three-point lead (55-52) with 2:31 to play after a pair of foul shots by Fabian. Lycoming then used a 5-2 spurt to tie the game at 57-57 on Sipple's three-pointer, setting up Manges late game heroics.
Kayla Feairheller led King's with 14 points and five rebounds while Manning followed with 12 points and four boards. Seitz added 11 points while Fabian tallied 10 points and nine rebounds.
Lycoming as paced by Ali Derr with 16 points and six rebounds while Chelsea Henderson followed with 13 points. Haley Sipple posted 11 points and four rebounds. Manges chipped in with six points, eight rebounds, and six assists. Lycoming also posted a 49-37 rebounding advantage.
King's will travel to nearby Dallas on Wednesday for a 6:00 p.m. Freedom Conference matchup with Misericordia.
