King's Women Fall to Gwynedd-Mercy 54-44 in D.C. Tourney Opener

KING'S WOMEN FALL TO GWYNEDD-MERCY 54-44 IN D.C.

WASHINGTON D.C. --   The Gwynedd-Mercy University women's basketball overcame a two-point half-time deficit by outscoring King's College 38-26 over the course of the second half as the Griffins posted a 54-44 victory in the opening game of the Fairfield Inn Holiday Tournament at Catholic University in Washington D.C.

With the loss, King's slipped to 8-3 while Gwynedd-Mercy improved to 8-2.

King's fell behind 7-0 after the first 3:44 of the game, missing its first nine shots from the field. The Lady Monarchs finally got on the board with 4:06 left in the first quarter on an offensive rebound and put-back by Jennifer Fabian. The senior forward then followed with another basket, then made two foul shots to cut the score to 7-6 with 1:43 on the clock. King's eventually tied the game at 8-8 at the end of the period after an inside bucket by Olivia Hoffman.

The Lady Monarchs took their first lead of the game with 7:43 left in the half on a three-pointer from Kasey Seitz, but Gwynedd scored the next four points to take a 14-12 lead with 6:51 remaining in the half. The Lady Monarchs countered with a three-pointer by Cayle Spencer and a jumper from Kayla Feairheller as King's built an 18-15 lead, before settling for an 18-16 lead at the halftime break.

In the third quarter King's would hold a 26-23 lead until the Griffins tied the game on a three-pointer by Charlotte Kucowski with 6:51 left in the period. Later, with the game knotted at 28-28, Gwynedd-Mercy closed out the quarter with a 8-3 spurt as the Griffins took a 36-31 lead into the fourth quarter.

After a Hoffman inside basket brought King's to within 36-33, Gwynedd used a 7-0 run to extend the lead to 43-33 after a pair of foul shots by Olivia Bradford with 5:53 to play. Bradford later added two more foul shots to give the Griffins a 50-37 lead, their biggest of the game, with 1:52 remaining. King's would come no closer than 10 points the rest of the way.

Fabian led King's with 11 points and nine rebounds while Feairheller followed with nine points and three boards. Seitz added six points while Spencer and Tara Zdancewicz contributed five points each. Hoffman chipped in with four points and nine rebounds. King' shot 27.9 (17-61) percent from the field and just 17.9 (5-28) from three-point range.

Kucowski led Gwynedd with 17 points while Bradford followed with 19.  

King's will wrap up play at the event Wednesday with a 1:00 p.m. matchup against Neumann University.
