KING'S MEN'S LAXERS CLINCH FREEDOM CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT BERTH WITH 11-4 VICTORY OVER MANHATTNAVILLEWILKES-BARRE, PA --- The King's College men's lacrosse team celebrated Senior Day on Saturday with a 11-4 victory over Manhattanville College at McCarthy Stadium. The victory clinched a berth into the Freedom Conference tournament for the Monarchs in the last game of the regular season for both teams.
King's improves to 6-7 overall and 3-3 in Freedom play with the win and will enter the Freedom Conference Tournament as the fourth-seed as will face top-seeded Eastern University. Manhattanville sees their season come to an end with a 5-9 overall record and 1-5 mark in conference competition.
Brock Johnson gave the Monarchs a 1-0 lead with a goal just two minutes into the game. The Valiants scored the next four goals, three of which came from Andrew Murray, to take a 4-1 lead with 11:55 left in the first half. King's responded with goals from
Reed Jimenez and Johnson to cut the deficit to 4-3 heading into halftime.
The Monarchs came out strong in the second half scoring three goals in the third quarter to take a 6-4 lead. They scored five more goals in the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach. Jimenez,
A.J. Bungert, and
Mike DiCarlo all scored twice in the second half while
Evan Lawshe and
Kevin Sweeney added a goal each. The Monarchs dominated the second half gaining possession on eight of nine faceoffs and outshooting the Valiants 25-4.
King's took advantage of five Valiant penalties with three extra-man goals. The Monarchs outshot the Valiants 45-15 and held a 25-10 advantage in ground balls.
Nick Foley won 14 of 18 faceoffs.
Reed Jimenez led the Monarchs with three goals while
Brock Johnson had two goals and two assists.
A.J. Bungert and
Mike DiCarlo scored two goals each and
Kevin Sweeney and
Evan Lawshe both scored once.
Michael Paniccia added an assist.
William Pokorny made five saves.
Andrew Murray scored three goals and Connor Normandin added a goal for the Valiants. Zach Hoffman made 14 saves in goal.
The Monarchs will now enter the Freedom Conference Tournament as the fourth-seed and will travel to St. Davids, PA to face top-seeded Eastern University on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. Eastern defeated King's 14-5 in their meeting back on April 1
st. Misericordia and FDU-Florham will face each other in the other semi-final matchup.
