KING'S WOMEN'S BASKETBALL FALLS TO GWYNEDD 65-54
GWYNEDD VALLEY -- The host Gwynedd Mercy University women's basketball team used a decisive fourth quarter, outscoring visiting King's College 24-11 over the game's final 10 minutes to secure a 65-54 victory Thursday night in Gwynedd Valley.
With the win the Griffins improved to 3-4 on the year while King's fell to 1-8.
After trailing 33-29 at the break, King's used a driving lay-up by Shae Grim and four straight points from Rebecca Prociak to take a 35-34 lead with 7:42 to play in the third quarter.
After neither team scored over a 4:27 span, Gwynedd took the lead on a Larissa Leyes jumper with 3:15 on the clock.
King's responded with a three-pointer by Grim and a pair of foul shots from Olivia Hoffman to push the King's lead to 40-36. After the Griffins used a 6-2 spurt to tie the game at 42-42 with 0:56 to go, King's used one-of-two free throws by Prociak to take a 43-42 lead into the fourth quarter.
Things began to go south for King's when Gwynedd-Mercy would forge ahead on a 6-0 run when Nicole Dombrowski scored two straight baskets and Charlotte Kucowski canned a short jumper to put the Griffins on top 48-43 with 8:47 left in the contest. Â
The Lady Monarchs closed to 52-49 on an inside basket by Prociak at the 6:24 mark, but Kucowski hit a three-pointer and Bianca Adams drilled back-to-back treys to push the score to 61-49 with 4:29 remaining.
After a King's turnover, Gwynedd continued to stretch the lead as Jayla Greene scored a lay-up to make it a 63-49 game with 3:59 to play. King's ended a 3:24 scoreless stretch when Hoffman made one of two free throws and Kayla Dillinger converted a lay-up to bring the score to 63-52 with 2:24 on the clock. But the Lady Monarchs would draw no closer as the Griffins walked away with the victory.
King's was paced by Prociak with 16 points and seven rebounds. Hoffman followed with nine points, 10 rebounds, six blocked shots and five assists while Feairheller also added nine points with six boards. Dillinger tallied eight points with four assists while Grim scored six points with three rebounds. Hoffman moved to within seven blocks of King's career mark of 207 set by Heather Medashefski from 1996-1999.
King's shot 33.9 (20-59) percent from the field and 29.4 (5-17) from three-point range while committing 19 turnovers.
Kucowski led the Griffins with 16 points and 14 rebounds while Dombrowski followed with 12 points, six rebounds, and five steals. Leyes chipped in with 11 points while hitting on a trio of three-pointers.
King's will head into semester break and will not return to the court again until January 4 when the Lady Monarchs open their Freedom Conference schedule at Delaware Valley University. Â
