KING'S MEN'S LAXERS FALL TO MORAVIAN 10-8Â
BETHLEHEM -- The host Moravian College men's lacrosse team broke open a tie game with two goals over the final 2:10 of play as the Greyhounds fought off visiting King's College 10-8 in a non-conference matchup Wednesday in Bethlehem.
With the win Moravian improved to 8-2 while King's slipped to 1-6 on the year.
King's built a 2-1 lead after one quarter on goals by Brock Johnson and Evan Lawshe. But the Greyhounds scored four straight goals to take a 5-2 lead until Reilly Breig converted a pass from Shawn Dickey at the 2:43 mark to make it a 5-3 game at the half.
The Monarchs scored 3:23 into the third quarter when Marshall Hardy scored off a feed from Johnson to cut the Moravian lead to 5-4, but the Greyhounds countered with two straight goals of their own to push the score to 7-4 . King's countered with a Kyle Wilk goal to trim the lead to 7-5 heading in to the fourth quarter.
King's cut the lead to one goal when Dickey scored unassisted 1:10 into the final period to bring the Monarchs to within 7-6. Moravian, however would take advantage of a King's penalty to score a man-up goal with 7:49 remaining to go up 8-6.
But the Monarchs rallied with a goal by Johnson with 5:52 left and then tied the score at the 4:38 mark when Dickey scored on a pass by Johnson to knot the score at 8-8.
But Moravian responded with an unassisted goal from Dom Gurreri with 2:10 to play, then added a goal from Alec Oriolo to push the score to 10-8 with 1:27 on the clock. King's managed three shots the rest of the way but were unable to find the back of the net as Moravian held on for the victory.
King's outshot Moravian 37-27 and owned a 35-27 advantage in ground balls. The Monarchs also won 15-of-22 faceoffs in the game. Â
Johnson led King's with two goals and two assists while Dickey added two goals and one assist. Breig, Wilk, Lawshe, and Hardy added one goal apiece. Lawshe had a team-high seven ground balls while Nick Foley and Johnson had six ground balls each. Foley also won 15 of the 22 faceoffs in the game. Monarch goalie George Pfeiffer posted eight saves.
James Carroll led Moravian with four goals while David Fiumara and Oriolo netted two each. Greyhound keeper Kurt Dick made 15 saves.
The Monarchs will be idle until April 9 when KIng's travels to Madison, NJ to face Drew University.
