KING'S WOMEN'S LAXERS FALL TO WIDENER CHESTER, PA --- Host Widener University handed the King's College women's lacrosse team their first loss of the season with a 17-9 victory at Edith Dixon Field in Chester on Saturday afternoon.
King's falls to 2-1 on the season while Widener wins their season opening game this year.
Amanda Carroll gave the Lady Monarchs a 1-0 lead just 29 seconds into the game but Widener responded with five straight goals, including three by Kelsey Powell, to take a 5-1 lead. Carroll scored her second goal of the game off an assist from
Gabriella Morrocu with 14:30 left in the half to cut the deficit to 5-2. The Pride scored the next two goals to increase their lead to 7-2 before
Sarah Almony scored her seventh goal of the year for the Lady Monarchs with 5:06 left in the half. Widener scored once more before the end of the half to take an 8-3 lead heading into the second half.
In the second half Morrocu scored off a free position shot 40 seconds in to cut the lead to 8-4. Widener responded with a goal of their own before Morrocu and
Anastasia Araviakis scored back-to-back goals for King's to cut the lead to 9-6. Powell scored her fourth goal of the game for Widener with 20:28 left to increase the lead to 10-6. Araviakis cut the lead to 10-7 with a goal with 19:05 left in the game. The Pride scored the next three goals to take a 13-7 lead. Carroll cut the advantage to 13-8 with her third goal of the game with just under 14 minutes left. Widener put the game out of reach with four straight goals to increase their lead to nine. Araviakis rounded out the scoring with a goal with 11 seconds left.
Anastasia Araviakis and
Amanda Carroll each had three goals for King's.
Gabriella Morrocu had two goals and an assist and
Sarah Almony scored once.
Victoria Zawacki made 11 saves in goal.
The Pride were led by Kelsey Powell with five goals and two assists. Brooke Clasing had four goals, Kaylee Horchak had three and Meghan Garvey had two goals and one assist. Grace Morales made eight saves in goal for the win.
Widener outshot King's 32-20, had a 28-20 advantage in ground balls, and had 22 turnovers compared to King's 24.
The Lady Monarchs will be back in action next Saturday when they travel to Selinsgrove to face Susquehanna University at 1:00 p.m.
