Late Goals Gives King’s Men’s Lacrosse 9-8 Senior Day Victory over Manhattanville

MONARCHS END SEASON WITH COME FROM BEHIND VICTORY ON SENIOR DAY

WILKES-BARRE, PA --- The King's College men's lacrosse team scored two goals in the final 67 seconds to defeat Manhattanville College 9-8 on Senior Day at McCarthy Stadium in Wilkes-Barre on Saturday. Brett O'Neill tied the game up with 1:07 on the clock and then Brock Johnson scored the game-winner off an assist from Shawn Dickey with 9.8 seconds remaining.

The Monarchs end the season with a 5-10 overall record and 2-5 mark in conference play. The Valiants fall to 6-8 overall and 2-5 in conference.
King's scored first with the only goal of the first quarter when O'Neill scored off a pass from Johnson. The Monarchs increased their lead to 2-0 in the second quarter when Mike DiCarlo scored with 11:25 left off an assist from Brian Stiger. The Valiants got on the board with a goal with eighth minutes remaining in the half to cut the lead to one. The final four minutes of the half saw each team score two goals each as King's took a 4-3 halftime lead. The Monarchs started the run with DiCarlo's second goal of the game off of Johnson's second assist. The Valiants score an unassisted goal about a minute later followed by a goal from Brian Steiger with just over two minutes remaining to give King's a 4-2 lead. Manhattanville scored with 25 seconds left in the half to set the halftime score.

The Valiants scored the first two goals of the third quarter to take their first lead of the game at 5-4 with 9:24 on the clock. The Monarchs responded with goals from Steiger and Dickey to retake the lead with less than five minutes left in the quarter. However the Valiants scored twice in a span of 52 seconds to take a 7-6 lead. O'Neill made sure the Valiants would not enter the final quarter with the lead as he tied the game up with an unassisted goal.

In the fourth Andrew Murray scored his fourth goal of the game with 12:12 left to give Manhattanville an 8-7 lead. After a timeout called by the Monarchs in the defensive end of the field with 1:46 left, Craig Lowman forced a turnover and picked up the ground ball and found O'Neill in transition up the field. O'Neill took the ball towards the goal and rocketed in the game-tying goal with 1:07 remaining. The Monarchs were awarded the following face-off on a violation and calmly passed the ball around looking for an opportunity to strike. They finally found that opportunity when Johnson took a pass from Dickey on the left wing and fired pass the Valiant keeper for the game-winning goal with 9.8 seconds on the clock.  The Valiants won the next face-off and had one final shot at goal with three seconds left but it went off a King's defender and back behind the goal.

The underclassmen made sure they sent the seven seniors playing their final game out with a win. Brett O'Neill led the Monarchs with four points on three goals and an assist. Brian Steiger scored twice and had an assist while Brock Johnson had the game-winning goal and two assists. Mike DiCarlo scored twice in his final game while Shawn Dickey had a goal and an assist. Matt Basile was fantastic in goal making 17 saves to pick up the victory.

The Valiants were led by Andrew Murray with four goals and an assist. Colin Morrissey added two goals and an assist while Tyler Bentrewicz had a goal and two assists. Zach Hoffman picked up the loss in goal making eight saves.

Manhattanville held a 55-30 shot advantage and won 12 of the 21 face-offs.

Seniors Kyle Wilk, Michael Paniccia, Ryan Secor, Joseph Cupoli, Mike DiCarlo, Craig Lowman, and Ryan Boornazian were all honored in a pregame ceremony. The Monarchs finished the season with the best offensive numbers in program history. They recorded season records in goals, assists, and points. Their 136 goals tops the previous record of 134 set in 2014, their 83 assists passes the previous mark of 79 recorded in 2008, and the 219 points surpasses the previous record of 203 set in 2008.
