Monarchs Take Down Mustangs in MAC Freedom Meet

WILKES-BARRE, PA (November 10, 2018) — It was another win for the Monarchs this afternoon as the men and women breezed by Stevenson University. This is the second victory in a row for both teams as well as the second conference meet won. The women beat the Mustangs 124-63 while the men came out on top 154-21.
 
The team of Noelle Pedersen, Kirsten Siwy, Kaelyn Gardner and Claire Coe finished first in the women's 200 yard medley relay with a time of 1:57.11. Stevenson's team finished third while the other two King's crews came in second and fourth.
 
The men's 200 medley relay was swam all by King's relay teams. Bryce Groshardt, Rhyce Hammaker, Chris Dionne and Dan Weekes made up the first place finishing team. 
 
For the 1000 yard freestyle swim, both the men and women's events were combined. Junior Kailie Karensky showed off her skills swimming alongside Brian Brown of Stevenson and Andrew Johnson of King's. As Brown took the first place finish, Johnson came in second in 12:02.44 and Karensky touched in just .46 seconds after at 12:02.91.
 
Freshmen Coe has continued to impress in her rookie season, she notched the first place finish in the women's 200 yard freestyle, coming out on top five seconds faster than Stevenson's second place swimmer. Gardner would clinch the third place ending. 
 
In the 200 free for the men, King's would make up all three swimmers competing. Chris Soutter,Joel Williams and Tyler Higgins battled it out but Soutter would finish seconds ahead the two in 1:53.54.
 
Melina Good (27.01) solidified a second place Monarch finish in the 50 freestyle where Abbi Strennen (27.09) would come in third. Hammaker took the top spot in the men's race with a time of 23.15 and Dionne third with 23.66.
 
Pedersen (2:30.49) grabbed second place in the 200 IM race while Groshardt (2:06.78) would beat out Tom Montvydas (2:18.00) in the men's race by 11 seconds. 
 
Gardner accumulated another first place finish in the women's 200 butterfly while the Monarch men would finish first through third in their race. Shawn Parrott came out on top in a time of 2:10.98 followed by James Martin by two seconds and Williams by nine. 
 
Junior Siwy took a first place finish in the 100 freestyle while Strennan took third and another three King's men competed against each other in their own race. Randill De Asis touched the wall first followed by Alex Schwartz and Matt Lowry.
 
The 200 backstroke had Pedersen place second in the women's race and Groshardt would top the three King's swimmers participating in the men's heat. 
 
Redding finished second in the women's 500 yard freestyle while Paige Molnar clinched a third place finish. Usual sprinters Hammaker and Weekes swam against Brown of Stevenson. Weekes would finish first and Hammaker just one second behind him. 
 
Siwy recorded another first place finish in one of her best events, the 200 breaststroke. She touched the wall in 2:29.79. She was followed by Sam Cote and Kellyo Keane. Kris Boxter took the top spot for the men.
 
The last event of the meet was the 400 freestyle relay. Good, Strennen, Redding and Coe made up relay team A who finished first in 3:57.55. All men's team were comprised of King's swimmers but Soutter, Williams, Schwartz and Dionne were the top finishers with 3:33.40.

Next weekend, November 17 & 18, King's will host the Diamond City Invitational at the Wyoming Valley CYC. Saturday the action will begin at 9 a.m. and Sunday it will begin at 10 a.m.
