MONARCH MEN'S LACROSSE RECORD 9-2 VICTORY AT MARYWOOD
SCRANTON, PA --- The King's College men's lacrosse team scored eight straight goals to pick up a 9-2 victory at Marywood University on Wednesday afternoon in Scranton.
The Monarchs improved to 1-1 on the season while the Pacers fell to 2-2.
Marywood struck first when Rob Maini scored with 7:37 left in the first quarter.
Shawn Dickey evened the score with an unassisted goal 42 seconds later. King's took the lead when
Brock Johnson took advantage of Marywood's first penalty of the game with a man-up goal off an assist from
Brian Steiger with five minutes to-go in the quarter.
Omar Nijmeh gave the Monarchs a 3-1 lead with an unassisted goal with 2:17 on the clock. Dickey and Johnson each scored their second goals of the game in the second quarter to give King's a 5-1 halftime lead.
Johnson completed the hat trick to open up the scoring in the second half off an assist from
Jared Gambino at the 8:08 mark.
Ryan Matusiewicz made it 7-1 with a man-up goal four minutes later off an assist from Johnson. The duo connected again with 27 seconds left in the period as Johnson scored his fourth goal of the game to give the Monarchs a 8-1 lead headed into the final quarter.
Marywood stopped the King's run with a goal by Austin Maylor with 12:38 left in the game. Nijmeh scored his second goal of the game with four minutes left to wrap up the scoring.
Brock Johnson led the Monarchs with four goals and one assist.
Omar Nijmeh and
Shawn Dickey scored two goals each with
Ryan Matusiewicz had a goal and an assist.
Jared Gambino and
Brian Steiger had an assist each.
Brett O'Neill and
Trevor Douenias recorded five ground balls each and Douenias won seven of 11 face-offs.
Matt Basile made 12 saves in goal to pick up the victory.
The Monarchs held a 34-25 shot advantage and a 32-29 advantage in ground balls. Each team won seven face-offs while King's was 3-8 on extra-man opportunities while holding the Pacers to 0-3.
King's will be back in action next Wednesday in their first home game of the year when they welcome University of Scranton to McCarthy Stadium for a 4:00 p.m. start.
