WILKES MEN'S LACROSSE TEAM DOWNS KING'S, 12-5
EDWARDSVILLE -- The host Wilkes University men's lacrosse team used a decisive third quarter, outscoring rival King's 5-0 in the period to break open a game tied 3-3 at the half, as the Colonels posted a 12-5 victory over the Monarchs Wednesday night at Schmidt Stadium.
With the loss, King's slipped to 4-5 overall and 1-1 in the MAC Freedom Conference. Wilkes, meanwhile, improved to 6-5 and 1-1 in league play. It also marked Wilkes' first-ever victory over King's as the Colonels are in their third season as an NCAA Division III varsity program.
Shawn Dickey scored twice in the first half while Alec Martin also struck net for the Monarchs in the opening stanza.
But in the second half the Colonels scored seven straight goals before Dickey broke the streak for the Monarchs with 7:47 left in the contest to bring the score to 10-4.
Dickey led King's with three goals while Matt Basile made five saves for the Monarchs. Nick Foley won 15-of-19 faceoffs and posted a team-high five ground balls.
John Wink led the Colonels with three goals and three assists while Nick Ruggerio followed with three goals and two assists. Nico Lorenzo added two goals and two assists while Carter Whittemore registered 17 saves..
King's returns to action Saturday with a 1:00 PM home matchup against FDU-Florham at McCarthy Stadium.
