MISERICORDIA MEN'S LACROSSE RALLIES FOR 8-6 VICTORY OVER KING'S
WILKES-BARRE -- The visiting Misericordia men's lacrosse team trailed 5-3 after three quarters of play but outscored King's College 3-1 over the final 15 minutes to play as the Cougars tallied a 8-6 victory Wednesday night in McCarthy Stadium.
With the win Misericordia clinched an MAC Freedom Conference Tournament berth while improving to 12-1 overall and 5-1 in league play.
King's, meanwhile, slipped to 6-7 and 3-3 in conference games and missed out on an opportunity to clinch a playoff berth with the loss. The Monarchs are tied for third-place with FDU-Florham and stand one game ahead of Manhattanville with one league game to go.
With the game tied 3-3 in the second quarter, the Monarchs used a goal from Omaj Mijmeh to take a 4-3 lead into the halftime break. In the third quarter the Monarchs upped the lead to 5-3 on a goal by Brock Johnson.
The score would remain the same until the fourth quarter when Patrick Kellish and Brandon Winslow scored back-to-back goals for the Cougars over the span of 1:02 to forge a 5-5 tie. Misericordia then scored a third straight goal when Paul Hanrahan found the back of the net with 11:20 to play to give the Cougars a 6-5 advantage.
King's would tie the score at 6-6 when Shawn Dickey struck net with 9:20 on the clock.
But Misericordia came through in the closing minutes when Chris Fleming scored with 2:28 to play and Hanrahan followed with another goal just 0:20 later to seal the Misericordia victory.
Hanrahan had three goals and an assist to pace the Cougar attack while Fleming added one goal and one assist. Nick Torzilli dished out three assists while Antonio Whyte made 13 saves.
For King's, six different players scored goals. Nick Foley won 11-of-18 faceoffs and had eight ground balls.
King's will have one more chance to clinch a Freedom Conference Tournament berth on Saturday when the Monarchs travel to face first-place Eastern University at 1:00 PM in St. Davids.
