Monarch Men's Lacrosse Game Notes - Lycoming

WILKES-BARRE, PA (February 25, 2019) – The King's College men's lacrosse team looks to gain their first win of the season against Lycoming College in a non-conference home match this Saturday March 2 at 1 p.m. The Monarchs are coming off a 12-6 defeat to Susquehanna last Saturday.

Last Time Out: The King's College men's lacrosse team held their own against Susquehanna University last Saturday afternoon, but ultimately fell to the River Hawks 12-6 in a non-conference game at McCarthy Stadium.
 
Susquehanna struck first, scoring two goals in the first quarter, one from Erik Lanyi and another unassisted goal from Colton Dick. The Monarchs scored two in the second quarter, however the River Hawks would surge with a four-goal performance in the second quarter to bring their lead up to 6-2.
 
The game was still in reach for the Monarchs heading into the break thanks to senior goalkeeper Matt Basile with eight saves in the first half. Susquehanna would get one through, and then the Monarchs picked up three goals in the third quarter, capping off a hat trick for sophomore Gabe Vansuch, and bringing the game back within two, with a score of 7-5 heading into the fourth quarter.
 
Susquehanna would then put the game out of reach, scoring the next five goals, the last being with 3:16 remaining in the fourth quarter. Sophomore Charlie Alessi would net one more for the Monarchs with 1:06 remaining.
 
The River Hawks ended with a 43-32 shot edge on the game. As well as the hat trick from Vansuch and one goal from Alessi, junior Jared Gambino scored two, and also led the team with a season-high eight shots. Sophomore Trevor Douenias picked up six ground balls for the team, a senior Mike McDougal caused a season-high two turnovers.
 
A Look at the Monarchs (0-3, 0-0 MAC Freedom):
  • The Monarchs will look to go on the attack this weekend, scoring six or fewer goals in each of their first three games. King's shooting percentage of .172 is seventh in the league.
  • The Monarchs are sixth in the conference in goals allowed per game.
  • Senior netminder Matt Basile continues to do incredibly in the cage as he leads the MAC Freedom with his 20 saves per game.
  • Sophomore Gabe Vansuch is currently 10th in the league in goals per game with 2.33 a contest. He leads the team with seven goals.
  • Sophomore Charlie Alessi and senior Brian Steiger each lead the team with three assists.
  • Sophomore Trevor Douenias is second in the conference with a faceoff percentage of .436.
A Look at the Warriors (0-3, 0-0 MAC Commonwealth):
  • Lycoming is coming off an overtime loss of 8-7 against Gwynedd Mercy University last Saturday. The Warriors then fell to No. 15 Ithaca College 17-3 Wednesday. 
  • Sophomore Dominick Massaro leads the team with five goals on the season, posting 14 shots with a team-leading 12 on goal. 
  • Senior Andrew Ream paces the attack with eight points, dishing out a team-leading four assists to go with four tallies of his own. 
  • Max Hanson and Drew Collins each have two goals and an assist this season for the Warriors. 
  • Senior netminder Michael Tenant was a First Team All-MAC Commenwealth goalkeeper with his 201 saves and .569 save percentage.
  • Tenant set a school record for saves in a game Wednesday against Ithaca, making 28 stops in the defeat. 
  • Lycoming's defense is led by senior Eric Schutta, who has caused four turnovers as well as picking up seven ground balls.
 
Against Lycoming: The Monarchs are 3-7 in their last 10 matches against Lycoming. Lycoming has won the last two meetings against the Monarchs, most recently winning in 2018 with a score of 17-8. However, the Monarchs have forced overtime in two of the three contests preceding the match last year.
 
Up Next: King's travels to Danbury, CT over the Spring Break session on Wednesday, March 6 at 4 p.m. to take on the Colonials of Western Connecticut State.
