Monarch Men's Lacrosse Game Notes - Misericordia

WILKES-BARRE, PA (April 23, 2019) – The King's College men's lacrosse team will hit the road as they head to Dallas, PA to take on Misericordia University in some more Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) action.

Last Time Out: The King's College men's lacrosse team played host for undefeated DeSales University last Wednesday evening who would take the contest 19-4.
 
DeSales scored the first goal about a minute into the game, coming from Justin Monaghan with an assist from Zach Bowen. After that, the Bulldogs took command of the contest afterwards. They would score five more times in the first quarter, leading 6-0.
 
They then kicked off scoring again within 20 seconds from an unassisted goal from Joe Neggia.
 
Sophomore Gabe Vansuch would put the Monarchs on the board with an assist from Ryan Matusiewicz on the EMO with 12:09 to go in the first half.
 
They would strike again about three minutes later when Alec Martin scored a goal with the help of senior Brian Steiger on another extra man opportunity.
 
DeSales would take over once more, netting the next five goals to go up 12-2 after the break.
 
The Bulldogs would shut out the Monarchs in the third quarter with five more goals to take a 17-2 lead.
 
King's would start the scoring in the fourth quarter, with a goal from Vansuch off an assist by Charlie Alessi a minute and a half into the quarter. The duo would strike again about nine minutes later.
 
DeSales would round out the scoring with two more to take the 19-4 lead and the win.
 
Vansuch scored three goals on four shots and three shots on goal to lead the team with three points. Alessi would score two points off of two assists and also scooped up two ground balls.
 
Matusiewicz picked up an assist, scooped up four ground balls and had a team-high three caused turnovers. Sam Moyer would lead the team with five ground balls, and caused a turnover.
 
A Look At The Monarchs (3-10, 1-4 MAC Freedom):
  • Gabe Vansuch leads the offense with 30 points off of 25 goals and five assists.
  • Vansuch is ranked 10th in the MAC Freedom in goals per game with nearly two goals per game.
  • Brain Steiger is not far behind with 26 points on 14 goals and 12 assists.
  • Matt Basile leads the conference in saves and is fourth in the conference in save percentage.
  • Basile's 15.46 saves per game ranks him 12th in the nation, and is 26th in the nation in save percentage with a .593 mark.
  • Trevor Douenias ranks eighth in the league in ground balls per game.
  • Sam Moyer and Jacob Wrede each lead the team in caused turnovers with 14. Chris Surina is not far behind with 13 of his own.
 
A Look At The Cougars (7-6, 3-2 MAC Freedom):
  • Misericordia heads into this matchup on a three-game winning streak, last beating Wilkes 13-10.
  • The Cougars lead the league in goals, assists and points per game.
  • Patrick Luzzi leads the offense for the Cougars with 63 points on 43 goals and 20 assists.
  • Luzzi ranks third in goals per game in the conference, and second in points per game.
  • Matt Beck is second in the league in save percentage, with a .607 mark.
  • Garrett Heidecker is fourth in the conference in face-off percentage, winning 59.5 percent of his face-offs.
 
Against Misericordia All-Time: King's and Misericordia are about even all-time, with Misericordia having a slight edge as King's has gone 8-7 since 2002. Misericordia has won the last five, most recently winning in 2018 MAC Freedom Tournament 15-5, and also winning a close game 8-6 earlier that season.
 
Up Next: King's will play their final game of the regular season at McCarthy Stadium Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. against Manhattanville for Senior Day.
