Monarch Men’s Lacrosse Game Notes – FDU-Florham

WILKES-BARRE, PA (April 5, 2019) – The King's College men's lacrosse team will be looking to even its Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) record Saturday, traveling to Madison, NJ to take on FDU-Florham for a 1 p.m. face-off with the Devils. King's had a two-game winning streak snapped Wednesday evening to Wilkes University.

Last Time Out: Visiting Wilkes University outscored the King's College men's lacrosse team 4-1 in the deciding third quarter, opening a 2-1 halftime lead to earn an 8-5 Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) victory over the Monarchs in the conference opener for both teams from McCarthy Stadium.

Chris Surina was strong defensively for King's, as he led the Monarchs with three caused turnovers and three ground balls, and long stick midfielder Jacob Wrede had three ground balls and a caused turnover. King's did do a strong job on Wink, who came into the game as the NCAA leader in points per game, holding him to just a goal and assist.

Vansuch led the Monarchs with three points on two goals and an assist, while Steiger finished with two goals. O'Neill added two assists, and Jack Camp posted a goal as well for King. Basile finished with 15 saves and only eight goals allowed. King's was 21-of-24 on clear attempts.

Wilkes outshot the Monarchs by a slight 39-36 total, and went 3-of-5 on man-up opportunities. Connor Daly tallied three times for Wilkes, adding an assist, and Weaver finished with three points thanks to two goals. Whittemore finished with 13 stops in goal for the Colonels.

A Look At The Monarchs (2-7, 0-1 MAC Freedom):
  • The Monarchs come into the game having some success of late defensively, allowing just over seven goals per game over the last three contests.
  • Sophomore attack Gabe Vansuch continues to pace the Monarchs in goal scoring, as he currently has a nine-game scoring streak while posting seven games with two or more goals.
  • Senior Brian Steiger is coming on strong of late, as the attach has scored in his last three and is averaging three points per game over the last three games.
  • Junior long stick midfielder Jacob Wrede has been strong lately, posting caused turnovers in each of his last five games while averaging just under three ground balls per game over his last four.
  • Sophomore Chris Surina had his best game of the season on Wednesday, causing three turnovers while picking up three loose balls. He ranks second to Wrede in caused turnovers this season with 12.
  • Since his return, senior attack Brett O'Neill has posted four points over his first two games back including three assists.
  • Senior Matt Basile continues to star in cage for the Monarchs, as he has posted six games with double digit saves this season. Basile chalked up 15 saves Wednesday against Wilkes.
  • King's is taking care of the ball during the recent three-game stretch, as the Monarchs have forced more giveaways then committed in each of its last three games.
A Look At The Devils (5-3, 1-0 MAC Freedom):
  • FDU-Florham is coming off a 13-9 win over Delaware Valley University Wednesday, and has won its last two games including an 8-6 win over Drew University on March 27.
  • John Belanger leads the team in scoring with 27 goals, taking the most shots on the team with 84 while adding six man-up goals.
  • Michael Warg is the go-to man on EMO situations, as eight of his 17 goals in 2019 have been with the man advantage.
  • Zane Johnston is second on the team with 22 points on 12 goals and 10 assists, scoring on 37.5 percent of his shots.
  • John Guido leads the team with 13 assists, posting five goals as well.
  • FDU-Florham has struggled mightily at the face-off dot, winning just 25.7 percent of draws this season. That is the sixth-lowest percentage in the nation.
  • Michael Adragna has been strong on defense, causing the most turnovers on the team with 26, while his 3.25 per game is second in the MAC Freedom.
  • Teammate Macgyver Hay is third in the league with three caused turnovers per game, and Mike Gartner also has 10 caused giveaways along with 10 ground balls.
  • Adam Reiger has started all eight games in net for the Devils, making 88 stops while his 56.8 save percentage is sixth in the league.
Against FDU-Florham: Dating back to the 2002 season, King's is 5-11 against the Devils though the teams have split the last right games. King's won a thrilling 8-7 game in Wilkes-Barre last season, but King's is just 1-6 in Madison all-time with the lone road win against FDU coming in 2013, a 9-8 victory.
