Monarch Men's Lacrosse Game Notes - Delaware Valley

WILKES-BARRE, PA (April 9, 2019) – The King's College men's lacrosse team are still on the hunt for their first Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) win Wednesday, playing host to Delaware Valley University for a 7 p.m. face-off with the Aggies. The Monarchs are trying to snap a two-game losing streak after dropping a close game against FDU-Florham.

Last Time Out: The Monarchs went to Madison, NJ to take on the Devils of FDU-Florham and went the distance, but a third quarter surge would prove to be the deciding factor, as FDU-Florham would go on to win their second MAC Freedom contest 6-5.
 
Brian Steiger would prove to be the offense's best weapon this contest, as he put up three points on a goal and two assist to be the only Monarch with multiple points last Saturday. He also scooped up eight ground balls and caused a turnover.
 
Trevor Douenias had his best game in the face-off, winning 10 of his 14 face-offs, the best he has done all season. He also contributed with a one-shot, one-goal game as well as eight ground balls.
 
Ryan Matusiewicz and Alec Martin each brought in four ground balls and cause a turnover. Matusiewicz also added a goal.
 
Matt Basile would finish the day with 18 saves, and only allow six goals. Michael O'Brien added an assist to his name, and Jack Camp and Gabe Vansuch would each bring in a goal for the Monarchs.
 
FDU-Florham would outshoot King's 43-38, and get many more on target, with 24 shots on goal against the Monarchs' 15. Pat Stewart tallied twice and had an assist to lead the Devils with three points. Zane Johnston would also have multiple goals, with two. Adam Reifer had 10 saves on the day.
 
A Look At The Monarchs (2-8, 0-2 MAC Freedom):
  • The Monarchs come into this game continuing their defensive improvement, only allowing an average of six goals over the previous three games.
  • Sophomore attacker Gabe Vansuch still leads the offense this season, with 21 points on 18 goals and three assists. Vansuch continued his scoring streak with a goal against FDU-Florham. He still has a goal in every game he has played this season.
  • Senior Brian Steiger continued his surge with a three-point game against FDU-Florham, now sitting only three points behind Vansuch with 18 points on nine goals and nine assists.
  • While junior Jacob Wrede may have lost his caused turnover streak, he still leads the team in caused turnovers with 13 over the course of the season. He has also scooped up 14 ground balls.
  • Sophomore midfielder Trevor Douenias had a great game in the face-off Saturday, going 10 of 14. His overall face-off percentage of .455 currently ranks him eight in the MAC Freedom
  • Senior Matt Basile has not let the light stop shining on him as he continues to star in the cage. He now has seven games with double digit saves this season. He added 18 saves to his total against FDU-Florham last Saturday. His save percentage of .578 ranks him fifth in the conference.
 
A Look At The Aggies (5-6, 0-2 MAC Freedom):
  • The Aggies last faced undefeated DeSales University last Saturday, where the Aggies would fall 18-11. The Aggies rode a four-game winning streak into MAC Freedom play before falling to FDU-Florham 13-9 and then their loss against DeSales.
  • Jordan Smith leads the team with 41 points on 22 goals and 19 assists.
  • Sean Mylod leads the defense with 32 ground balls and 16 caused turnovers this season.
  • Bryan Thompson comes into Wednesday's game with a .578 face-off percentage, currently sitting at fourth in the MAC Freedom.
  • Orterro Felton and Jerad Wilson have both posted a 1.5 caused turnovers per game, currently tied for seventh in the league.
  • Gavin Yingling has started six of the eight games he has played this season. He has a .483 save percentage, with 74 goals allowed and 69 saves.
  • Nic Brown has also done well in the cage in the five games he has played and started, posting a save percentage of .579 on 48 goals allowed and 66 saves.
 
Against Delaware Valley University: Dating back to the 2016 season, King's is 2-2 against the Aggies. King's took their previous contest last season 8-6 after a strong first quarter put the Monarchs up 5-1.  King's is 1-1 against the Aggies at home, last losing to them in 2017, 10-6.
 
Up Next: King's College will head to St. Davids, PA on Saturday, April 13 at 1 p.m. to take on Eastern University at Olson Field in some more MAC Freedom play.
